2015 Water Reuse Project of the Year: SVAWPC

Black & Veatch was chosen as the prime consultant for the Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center. The SVAWPC takes treated wastewater that otherwise would be discharged into San Francisco Bay; further treats it through microfiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light; and produces 8 million gallons a day of highly purified water for multiple reuse applications. The facility is a sustainable water resource that saves, and even possibly expands, the area’s precious drinking water supplies. If you were to ask anybody, “Where does your water come from?” they would look at you and say “Well it came from the faucet. Didn’t you see where I got it?” No, where does that water come from?

We’re very dependent on imported water in the Bay Area. About half our water supply on average comes from the Sierra. Having a reliable supply is becoming much more prominent. People’s attention to it is much more acute.

Sanjay Reddy | Project Director, Black & Veatch:
When we started off, there was no drought. But as we started the project, Mother Nature changed her tune.

Santa Clara Valley Water District in San Jose had a choice: they could forget the issue or be leaders. And they just chose to be leaders. And we were right there with them, helping them make those complex decisions that Black & Veatch always does.

Pamela John | North Water Treatment Operations Manager, Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center:
We cannot control droughts, but we can influence and leverage are local resources. Recycled water is one of those local resources.

This is an exciting facility because every time we use this water, we are saving drinking water for drinking purposes.

In this county, recycled water contributes to about 5 percent of total water needs. We want to have this number go to 10 percent.

Jim Fiedler:
Today it provides water for landscape, irrigation and agricultural use. And then the same technology could be used for direct potable use someday in the future.

Pamela John:
We talk about purification in this facility; we have the microfiltration process that will remove protozoa, bacteria, and even the larger viruses. We team it up with something called reverse osmosis membrane filtration systems and we tagged on ultraviolet light disinfection. Even the smaller viruses are removed and all salts in the water.

You know, it’s the belt and suspenders kind of concept. We don’t just want to be sure, we want to be doubly sure.

Sanjay Reddy:
This globe is covered with water but the drinkable water is very minute. And that water needs to be protected; we need to recycle it as often as possible.

Jim Fiedler:
This facility is definitely our forward look into the future. When I think about what we do here, it takes three ingredients: certainly it takes water, it takes the infrastructure. And the third element of what we do, it takes people. And along the way Black & Veatch was with us to allow us to really prepare and plan and deliver a facility like this.

Water is here. We have what we have. We’ve got to make sure we make wise choices with it and use it in a way that benefits ourselves as well as the environment.
