Utilities need telecommunications networks to bring back all of the additional data that today's technology is providing. All that data has to get back to a central location for processing.

Smart grid programs are challenging utility networks by one, increasing the footprint that needs to be covered in the geographic coverage of the network, and two, the capacity that is required to transmit the additional data that is coming in from the additional field devices.

The utilities are addressing the capacity and the geographic challenges by one, utilizing their existing network that they have in place today and often times growing that to a certain extent. The second piece of that would come from public network that already in those neighborhoods today, creating a service for the end user that allows the utility to leverage the existing infrastructure and meet the needs of the telecom network.

Today's utilities are challenged with the additional requirements from their telecom staff in new technologies. As their evolve from more of a TDM type network to a Ethernet network, that creates a need for a skillset that utilities don't typically have in today's environment. So by doing that, it's causing them to do more outsourcing and bring that expertise in from outside the utility.
